Brenner Tunnel: a long-awaited breakthrough for European freight transport
23/05/2025
At last, the moment has arrived. The light at the end of the tunnel is no longer just a metaphor. The Italian section of the Brenner Base Tunnel is nearing completion and opens up new scenarios for those of us working daily in European logistics.
This is not just any infrastructure project, but what is set to become the longest underground railway tunnel in the world, stretching 64 kilometers from Fortezza (BZ) in Italy to Innsbruck in Austria. It is an ambitious initiative, strongly supported by the European Union, which has strategically included it in the Scandinavian-Mediterranean TEN-T Corridor, a key element of the Munich-Verona route.
What are the benefits? They are numerous for those who move goods every day, as this development will bring radical change. While today a truck takes about an hour and a half to cross the pass, in the future, freight trains will complete the journey in just 35 minutes. And it’s not just about saving time, it’s also about improving reliability. Rail transport reduces unpredictability and makes it easier to schedule shipments, allowing for more accurate delivery estimates. This project is a concrete response to two pressing needs: decongesting roads and significantly reducing harmful emissions. It’s no coincidence that the project has received such strong backing from European institutions.
For Tecnofreight, this development represents a valuable opportunity to integrate the new infrastructure into future logistics solutions, ensuring we continue to deliver a high standard of efficiency.
